Premenstrual Syndrome Treatment – What Helps?

If you suffer from symptoms of PMS, no one needs to tell you that your symptoms are real. From headaches and mood swings to bloating and body aches, the typical signs often arrive mid to late cycle as your body prepares for menstruation. Does anything really help PMS?

Ovulation occurs during mid cycle and a woman’s body prepares each month for the possibility of a fertilized egg and subsequent pregnancy. Hormonal changes occur to ready the body for such an event but, once the egg passes without fertilization and implantation, the hormones switch gears to prepare for menstruation.

The first change builds tissue inside the uterus to sustain a fetus, while the second change prepares this tissue to be shed if it goes unused. This constant cycling assures that a nice fresh uterine lining awaits each pregnancy, but also means that a woman of child-bearing age undergoes almost constant hormonal fluctuations.

These variations in hormone activity affect every organ in the body and are more extreme in some women than others. And, depending on individual body factors, some women are especially sensitive to these changes and find them very uncomfortable.

When seeking a PMS treatment, it is usually the symptoms which are addressed because the cause is considered normal. Emotional swings or headaches are generally treatable with a wide variety of options available. It is wise to begin with the least invasive or potentially harmful treatments; all have side effects.

Natural treatments and lifestyle changes are the most likely to have positive side effects as opposed to negative ones. However, if your symptoms are interfering with your quality of life, it may be necessary to take stronger measures such as OTC or prescription medications.

If none of the PMS treatments you have tried are helpful, it may even be necessary to undergo further tests or surgical procedures to determine if the problem is something more, or other, than PMS. It is always possible that the same hormonal changes which contribute to PMS may aggravate another unrelated problem, which then seems like a PMS symptom when it is not.

One of the best ways to resolve a recurring health problem is simply to keep track of it. Record the symptoms along with other details in your life such as foods eaten, beverages consumed, hours slept, physical activities, elimination functions and any supplements or medications taken. Patterns will often emerge which signal the changes most likely to be helpful.

Other issues to consider are your levels of stress and opportunities for relaxation. This doesn’t mean that anything is “in your head.” Stress has a profound effect on the hormone levels in your body as well as many other bodily functions.

When other hormone levels are in flux as part of the monthly cycle, and stress hormones are added to the mix, a wide variety of very real and unpleasant symptoms can be the result. The best PMS treatments seek to treat the whole body as well as specific symptoms.
